The Legacy

of Freedom and

Sovereignty

Victory Park

Victory Park is a monumental landmark built in Baku to commemorate Azerbaijan’s victory in the Second Karabakh War (2020) that resulted in the liberation of the country's territories from nearly three decades of occupation. It symbolizes the strength, resilience and unity of the Azerbaijani people, and it stands as a tribute to the soldiers who fought for the restoration of their country's territorial integrity. The park’s design blends modern architectural elements with traditional motifs, creating a powerful symbol of national pride and victory. It also represents the perseverance of the Azerbaijani people, who, despite the challenges they faced during the occupation, came together in the aftermath to rebuild and honour their history.

The Victory Arch, at the entrance of Victory Park, symbolizes the path to victory. Its structure includes 44 columns, with the tallest column rising 44 metres, thus symbolizing the liberation of the lands within 44 days. A memorial dedicated to 8th November – Victory Day has been installed at the park’s transition area. The green landscape surrounding the monument reflects the patterns of the “Chalabi” carpet, which belongs to the Karabakh carpet group. Carpet names often reflect the regions where they are made, with some also carrying ethnological connections with a tribe or clan. The “Chalabi” carpet is named after the villages of Chalabilar in Azerbaijan's Jabrayil and Barda districts, home to the Chalabilar clan. In early versions, the central design of the carpet represented a sunflower, which gradually transformed into a radiating sun. The oldest “Chalabi” carpets are attributed to the late 17th – early 18th centuries, during the Safavid period.

The park also features a thematic garden, a cascade style waterfall, the Karabakh Memory Garden, and an observation point offering a panoramic view of the park. The far end of the park is Freedom Flag Square.

The Power of Solidarity

Victory Park

This architectural masterpiece not only brings people together physically, it reminds them of their collective “intelligens” while also standing as a tribute to the courage, sacrifice and indomitable spirit that drove people to reclaim their homes and heritage. Trust and solidarity enabled them to overcome the hardships of history. It is a place of reflection, honouring those who fought for freedom and peace, reminding everyone of the strength found in a shared determination to protect what is theirs. Nature is also ours; we are part of it, and it is part of us.

This spirit of solidarity, so vital to their struggle, continues to inspire us today. Just as it united people in the past, it remains a guiding force in the present. It also aligns with the global significance of the Conference of the Parties (COP) under the UNFCCC, which plays a critical role in fostering international cooperation and addressing the pressing challenges of climate change. Through both the spirit of unity and global action, we are reminded that true strength lies in working together for the common good. We will succeed only if we recognize that each individual’s “intelligens” has the power to drive transformation. Without solidarity, no outcome will be achieved.
